What can the Likes of Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, a Blog and other Social Media Platforms do for Our Shelter Animals?
Plenty, says I, and I am out to prove it! Payson Web, my social media marketing biz here in Payson is currently working with the Gila County & Central AZ Humane Society, Payson Shelter staff, to educate their personnel about the benefits of using social media marketing strategies to broaden their reach beyond Payson to the farthest corners of Rim Country and Phoenix/Scottsdale Valley of the Sun. Our goal is to raise awareness for our shelter animals to all who travel here for hiking, camping, RVing and recreation, and not just the residents of Payson and Rim Country, whether part time or full time. We can do this with projects like the one we are proposing with Twitter, Mattel and Puppy Tweets, Social Media to the (Dog) Rescue.
The welfare of our animals transcends county lines, tourists and residents, full-timers and part-timers alike. We must all do our part to promote the well-being and ultimate happy ending (adoption) to the stories of our shelter's dogs and cats and to assist in the efforts of the Humane Society Board to raise money for the new shelter.
I came to Payson for 20 years from Scottsdale before I could actually relocate here and much for the same reasons everyone else does, fresh air, cooler temps, the scent of pines, a gentler sun. But there were a couple of big differences with me, first, I knew when I saw the town that day 20 years ago that I would retire here – somehow. And I didn't come just in the summers only, flying through the town on one mission, to get to 260 and the woods ASAP. Nope, I loved it in the all the seasons, especially fall. I could get trapped here (and did once) by a snow storm in the winter and loved every minute of it, curled up on my Mom's couch in front of a fire, high on a hill in Upper Round Valley.
There were many times when I visited Rim Country that some dog or other would insert his or her way into my life, either a stray that wandered into Mom's wooded acre needing a good feed, an injured mutt on the side of the road, even one that showed up in this totally remote campsite I had found looking for a meal, and boy did he need it!
So, why me? Do they just know by some built-in doggy radar that there is a sucker just around the corner? What was it the bums and hobo's used back in the 30's to mark the back door of a home that was good for a hand out! A sign that meant "bleeding heart lives here?" I simply cannot go to the shelter and not want to adopt all of them. This is no secret to my wife and I should be made of sterner stuff but when it comes to dogs, wow! I will go on record as of this minute in time and say that if I ever win the lottery this town will have the best animal shelter on the planet! And I personally will be owned by about 20 dogs! Maybe this is the very thing that dogs sense about me?
I will be forever grateful to the Payson Shelter for saving the life of the dog I adopted from them and the big brown dog who saved mine. He is the one who inspired me to start a pet blog of my own and it's named to honor the memory of my Mother who called her little shelter dog Spirit, "my baby pet." I miss you Ma!
So there you have it, Payson Web will do for our shelter animals what it is that Payson Web does, (and that keeps me away from all those sad eyes), which is social media marketing. Whether it's to gain prospects for a small business or to reduce the amount of time an animal spends in a shelter before it is adopted by a loving family, it works in much the same way. I hope to demonstrate the value of social media marketing for this particular cause by building a network of interlinking social media applications that when in place can be managed in such a way by shelter staff that they will ultimately be able to depend on a steady source of revenue that will assist in the fund raising efforts of the shelter, the shelter board and members and residents of Rim Country communities.
The goal of Payson Web (me), as a social media strategist, and as a caring human being, is to be instrumental in using the power of social media to bring attention to the cause of adopting animals that find themselves dependent on the wonderful care our shelter provides, in spite of limited funds, in spite of being short-staffed, in spite of leaky, open air conditions. Animals, saved by the love and care of shelter staff require an ever increasing audience of other caring human beings to spread the word. Dog lovers, cat lovers, pet people. Our neighbors in Rim Country, Scottsdale, Phoenix and beyond. With the power of social media, such as a blog, social media platforms such as, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter our dogs and cats will see just the barest amount of time in the shelter before they find good homes. And we will see the completion of a new much-needed new shelter facility – sooner rather than later!
